How to Evaluate Managed IT Support

A practical guide to comparing coverage, response expectations, planning, documentation, security, and accountability.

Published September 26, 2026

Use this guide to organize a productive conversation. The correct technical decision depends on the environment, business priorities, risk, and service agreement.

Define the operating need

List recurring interruptions, unsupported systems, upcoming projects, compliance needs, internal staffing limits, and the business outcomes support should improve.

Compare scope, not just price

Compare monitoring, patching, user support, projects, security, documentation, planning, exclusions, and third-party costs. A lower price can hide a much narrower responsibility.

Clarify response and escalation

Document request channels, priority definitions, response targets, after-hours coverage, escalation paths, and who can authorize emergency work.

Review documentation and ownership

Confirm who owns credentials, configurations, diagrams, licenses, domains, backups, and vendor relationships. The business should be able to understand its own environment.

Plan the first 90 days

A useful transition plan should cover discovery, access, inventory, urgent risk, documentation, maintenance baselines, communication, and a prioritized roadmap.
